MACDONALD, ALAN KEITH

Alan Keith MacDonald passed away peacefully at home on Friday June 7th, 2024, surrounded by his wife and daughters, at the age of 91. He led an extraordinary life that spanned air, land, and water. However, his enduring legacy was as a caretaker, teaching us all how to love and care for others. Alan's professional life was as diverse as it was impressive. He began his career in corporate environments at the Barrie Tannery, then progressed to become the National Service Manager and later the Assistant General Manager for West Bend. His passion for education drove him to train as a teacher and later as a machinist, a trade he taught at both the secondary and post-secondary levels. Alan's artistic side led him to study pottery in New York City, after which he taught ceramics and various other subjects in secondary school. His entrepreneurial spirit inspired him to operate a successful small marina, build and renovate homes, and skillfully repair small engines until retirement. Alan was a true lover of nature and had a great sense of adventure. His early life was spent on Georgian Bay, and in later years, he developed a deep affection for black water. He was often found on the Severn River in a canoe, either paddling or using a small Evinrude motor. Alan also loved motorcycles; his first bike was a home-built contraption made from a bicycle and a discarded washing machine motor. He earned his pilot's license, bought a Cessna, and soared through the skies. A voracious reader, he was rarely without a book in hand and always ready for a crossword puzzle. Alan was an animal lover who found joy in walking or cuddling with his cherished dog. An avid conversationalist, he had a unique ability to make everyone he spoke with feel truly seen and heard. He had a sweet tooth, particularly for maple syrup, butter tarts, and ice cream, always leaving room for dessert. Alan was deeply loved by his wife, Betsy; daughters Sarah, Stephanie, and Rachel; his son Doug; his sister Mary; ten grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by his beloved son, Robbie and grandson, Liam.

To honor Alan's memory, a drop-in celebration of life will be held on his birthday, August 14th, 2024, at the Gill’s Residence (6382 Line 8 North, Waubaushene) between 2 PM and 7 PM. Friends and family are invited to come together to share memories, stories, and celebrate the life of a man who touched many hearts. He lived well, loved well, and was well loved.
